The Musical Orchard

Bringing together the music of ancient Armenia and 17th-century Italy, the fruits of the two otherwise unrelated cultures come together to offer a stunning program of deeply emotional melodies and strange harmonies, originally conceived as a cultural and musical dialogue for the Boghossian Foundation and the Villa Empain in Brussels.

Music of Armenian saint Grigor of Narek give us a glimpse into the transcendant melodies of the early medieval church music of the Middle East, while later folk songs give testimony of the hardships of its people. At the same time, the juxtaposition of fluid variations on popular melodies and slow, almost experimental harmonic progressions of Italy at the birth of what would become the Baroque era offers a palate with an abundance of color.
